Who We Are
Based in Tigard, Oregon and serving the Portland Metro area, we're an eclectic group of 20+ individuals working together to create personal Eden's for our clients out of our love for the Earth. We’re passionate about what we do and it shows. With 38 years of experience in the field, we know our industry. We love taking on new challenges in projects large and small, and we dedicate our energy and expertise to everything we take on.
We strive to create a safe, healthy environment for our entire team—no matter who they are. Everyone is welcome and part of the team, and we extend that same space to our job sites and you, our clients.

History
Honoring Phil and Barb Thornburg: Founders of Winterbloom Landscaping
Phil and Barb Thornburg founded Winterbloom, Inc. in October 1983, laying the foundation for what is now Winterbloom Landscaping Cooperative. Their vision, dedication, and love for landscape design and gardening have left a lasting legacy in Tigard, Oregon, and beyond.
Phil's journey to becoming a renowned landscape designer began in the eastern part of the Belgian Congo (now Rwanda and Burundi), where he lived from 1953 to 1969. Growing up as the son of Quaker missionaries, Phil experienced a life rooted in self-sufficiency and a deep appreciation for natural beauty. His family not only supported the development of secondary education systems in the region but also cultivated the landscape around their home.
After graduating from Rift Valley Academy in Kenya in 1969, Phil embarked on a journey of education and exploration. He studied at George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, and the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, where he honed his skills in landscaping and French. Phil later earned a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Agriculture, and Soil Science from Oregon State University in 1974, while also pursuing advanced design studies at institutions like the John Brooks Institute. His work in landscape design has been featured in numerous publications, showcasing his expertise and creativity.
Phil and Barb’s partnership extended beyond their marriage in 1974 to their shared commitment to building Winterbloom. Together, they raised two daughters, Serenity and Samara, who now have families of their own. Through their leadership and dedication, Phil and Barb shaped Winterbloom into a trusted name in landscape design, installation, and gardening.
Today, Winterbloom Landscaping Cooperative honors Phil and Barb Thornburg for their remarkable contributions, celebrating their legacy as an enduring part of the Winterbloom story. Their passion for creating beautiful and sustainable landscapes continues to inspire our work.
